Study Habits – How to Succeed in Class

Written By: Hunter Mitchell

One of the main reason’s students drop out of college is because of their grades. With this being your first time on your own, it can be hard to find common ground between school and social life. This is why it is so vital to have good study habits. If you do everything correctly, you can still have the social life you want in college, while at the same time keeping your parents happy! Here are several things you can do to ensure that your grades will be up to par so that you can still go out and have fun on the weekends.

First and foremost, the number one way to succeed in college is to go to class! I understand that this may seem obvious, however there are plenty of students that don’t go to class and wonder why they aren’t doing well. Just making an appearance every day will give the professor the impression that you want to do well. If he/she sees you regularly, they will recognize you, and more likely give you slack if you aren’t doing well. To enforce this further, sit at the front of the class! How will the professor know who you are if you sit in the back of a lecture hall that seats 300 people? Moreover, sitting in the front will cause you to stay off your phone and take notes. What is the point in going to class if you don’t take notes? There is a chance that the professor may post their notes online, however going to class will always offer more knowledge than blindly copying notes in your dorm room. Furthermore, teachers often take attendance, which may have a significant impact on your grade! There are certainly exceptions to going to class such as personal issues or being sick, but whenever you can go to class, you should.

How you take notes during lectures can be just as crucial as going to class. The key is to get enough information down so that you will be set on the homework and exams. There are several note taking strategies that you can use to your advantage. One that is widely used is the Cornell Method. For this, keep track of keywords on the left side of your paper, and specific notes about them to the right. Then at the end of class, write a quick summary of everything on the bottom. Strategies such as using color coded pens and markers may be well organized, but can often take too long resulting in missed information! How you take notes also depends on the class; sometimes teachers use the whiteboard and sometimes they have Powerpoints. Whatever way the notes are presented, you will always be well-off if you keep track of the key bullet points, bolded words, and definitions.

For college classes, your professor is your best friend. After all, they will be the ones determining what grade you get in the class! This is why you should go to your teachers office hours whenever you get the opportunity to. Even if you think you are doing fine in the class, it’s always good to talk to your teachers about the class. Tell them you really want to do well and ask what advice they have on how to do that. This may seem awkward, and it might be! But I promise that it’s worth it. College classes also typically have teaching assistants that are there to help. They are there because they are knowledgeable about the course, so use them as resources! Having been a teaching assistant myself, I can say that students don’t use them nearly enough. Nonetheless, making friends with your teacher and going to their office hours will undeniably result in a better grade.

Other than the teacher, it is also extremely helpful to make friends with other students in class. Not only will this expand your social circle, but it will also help greatly with your grade. If you ever miss class, you can still get the notes. Or if you are struggling with the homework, you have someone to talk about it with. Plus, studying with friends will always keep you accountable.

The next major thing to help you succeed in classes is to, and I cannot emphasize this enough, GET A PLANNER. There is absolutely no way that you can memorize all of your due dates in your head! This is how people forget when assignments are due! Even if you write all the due dates in your individual notebooks, it is better to have one place where they all are. Most colleges have free planners in their book store, otherwise you can find them for very cheap online. Another thing you may consider doing is having an online planner. Keeping everything in an online notes app or on google drive works just as well! I prefer to do this because I have my computer with me everywhere I go, and a lot of my assignments are online.

Now all of these tips and tricks only do so much until you need to take your exams. Sometimes exams can make up the majority of your grade. That is why knowing how to study and take exams is imperative. First, make sure to begin studying before the night of the exam! Other things may come up that you cannot devote your entire attention to studying, so you need to give yourself enough time. Also, make sure to review any study guides the professor gives you. Doing this is sometimes better than studying the book; I have had full exams that are just different versions of the study guide. Next, make notecards whenever possible. These help the best for memorizing formulas or definitions. Make sure to check Quizlet to see if notecards for this class already exist, it will save you a lot of time! Lastly, signing up for a Chegg account makes studying and doing homework  a breeze. It costs $15 a month, but you can easily split it with multiple people. Chegg provides excellent problems for classes of all subjects and levels.

While taking the actual exam, make sure to remain calm and confident. If you do not know an answer, come back to it. Sometimes you will remember information later, or see new information that helps with previous questions! For multiple choice questions, cross of the ones that you know are wrong first. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure you’re on pace to finish within the time. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher or a teaching assistant. They may help you more than you think. As long as you are well prepared, you will ace that exam!

By following all of these guidelines, you will surely do well in all of your classes. Remember, you are in college to get a degree! The average cost per credit hour is $594! You are losing a lot of money if you have to retake a class, and much more if you end up dropping out. With that being said, college is also a place to have fun, and it is possible to do both. As long as you get your school work done first, you will have plenty of time to have fun with your friends!
